Our Guide to Essential Gear for Skiing

Skiing isn't just about having your skis, boots, and poles. It can include a lot of other equipment. Here are some of the things we deem essential when you hit the slopes:

1. Properly Fitted Ski Boots and Skis with Bindings

The last thing you want to worry about is if your ski boots or skis need to fit correctly. It can also be dangerous for your safety to wear ill-fitted or improperly maintained equipment. Be cautious about using other people’s gear, hand-me-downs or buying used or heavily discounted gear. Make sure you rent or buy them from a reputable store to ensure they match your skill level and body type. If you own your own skis, make sure they are tuned and the bindings are adjusted to your boots at the beginning of each season.

2. High-Quality Ski Helmet

We've mentioned safety, but having a quality ski helmet is essential. A well-fitted helmet is critical for protecting your head from potential injuries. It should meet the latest safety standards, which includes being retired 5 years from its manufacturing date OR once they absorb a fall, even just dropped down a flight of stairs. That means the helmet has done its job!

3. Thermal Base Layers

Where there's snow, there's frigid temperatures. You want to try to stay warm and dry with moisture-wicking thermal base layers made from merino wool or synthetic fibers. They form the foundation of your ski outfit.

4. Waterproof Yet Snug Ski Socks (move up after base layers, as it is kind of a base layer too)

It's important to make sure your feet stay dry; if they get wet, you get cold. Quality ski socks should keep your feet warm and dry while preventing blisters in the process, giving you the best of both worlds.

Tip: thinner socks are often better for minimizing movement between your feet and a snug fitting ski boot.

5. Insulated Ski Pants and Ski Jacket

Your average ski jacket and pants won't cut in those snowy mountains. Jackets need to be longer to protect your hands and bottom, while pants must fit over wide ski boots. You must get outerwear that provides waterproof yet breathable insulation to remain comfortable throughout the day.

6. Water-resistant Gloves or Mittens

Keeping your hands warm makes you feel comfortable and protects your fingers from frostbite. Everyone knows cold hands can ruin a day out. Keep your fingers warm with high-quality gloves or mittens—pack an extra pair for when they get wet.

  1. UV Protection Ski Goggles

Sunglasses won't do the trick when skiing against snowy wind and ice or somebody’s flailing poles while you’re waiting in line! Physical protection is important. Prevent snow glare while shielding your eyes from the sun's harmful rays with UV-protected goggles for long term vision health.

8. Foot and Hand Warmers

Pack hand and foot warmers for those extra chilly days to maintain circulation and warmth. Stay comfortable on the slopes all day long.

9. Ski Pass

Don’t forget your ski pass! Purchasing it online beforehand can save you time and stress at the resort, sometimes money too!

10. First Aid Kit and Emergency Contact Information

Being prepared is always best—carry a basic first aid kit and have your emergency contact information readily available.

11. High SPF Sunscreen or Chapstick (move down the list please)

Not only should you protect yourself from the cold but also from the sun's glare. It's very common for skiers to get sunburns or windburns. Make sure to apply a high-SPF sunscreen and lip balm.

12. Snacks and Your Water Bottle

Stay hydrated and energized with plenty of water and snacks. Because you often are not sweating, you may not think you are losing water but you are losing more than you think! Nuts, energy bars, and fruit are great on-the-go options.

Ski Safety Tips

Skiing can be hazardous if you don't take the proper precautions. Always try to do some light stretching before going out on the slopes, and pick trails that match your skill level. So many accidents occur when people choose unfamiliar terrain and don't know their limits. Other tips are staying hydrated and taking lots of breaks. Skiing is very energy-packed. It can drain you quite quickly, so to prevent fatigue early, you'll want to stop and have a snack or drink as much as possible. Remember to have situational awareness by being aware of your surroundings, including other skiers, snow conditions, and weather.

We've found skiers ski the safest when they prepare themselves for the worst. You can do this by constantly checking weather and trail conditions before heading out to avoid skiing in poor visibility or severe weather. Also, be cognizant of the skier's responsibility code. Know and obey it to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone on the mountain. Then, inform someone of your plans and expected return time, or stick with a buddy. Overall, being overly prepared is better than not being prepared at all. Try to remember all these safety tips for your next big trip!

How Much Ski Clothes Do You Need?

Remember that skiing is active, so your clothing may get wet or dirty quickly. It's always better to pack more rather than not have enough. When you end up packing multiple layers of clothing, you can easily add or remove them as the temperature changes. You should have enough base layers, mid-layers, and outerwear to last at least a few days. You may need more than one pair of ski pants and shirts if you're skiing all day. We recommend that you bring multiple numbers of pants, shirts, socks, and more, just in case. It's pretty standard for skiers to experience wet clothes early on in the day just due to severe weather.
